5 tricks to memorize vocabulary in English effectively

Learning English can be an exciting challenge, but it can also be difficult to remember the new words you learn. However, memorizing vocabulary doesn’t have to be frustrating or boring. Here are five effective tricks that will change the way you learn English vocabulary. As always, at Activatic we strive to offer personalized classes that are tailored to your needs, for both primary and ESO students.

1. Associates words with images or real situations.

Our brains are very visual, so linking words with images can make them stick more in the memory. For example, if you are learning the word “apple,” imagine a bright red apple or look up an image on the internet. Not only does this create an emotional link to the word, but it activates the parts of your brain responsible for visual processing.

In addition, you can use personal experiences to reinforce the association. Remember the last time you ate an apple? Think about it while repeating the word in English.

2. Use thematic lists to learn related words

Grouping words by topic makes them easier to remember, as they reinforce each other. For example, you can learn vocabulary related to cooking (“spoon”, “knife”, “plate”) or school (“desk”, “notebook”, “teacher”).

You can make your own lists of words or search for online resources that group them by category. This also allows you to practice concrete contexts that you will use in real life.

3. Repeat and review regularly

Repetition is the secret to success when it comes to memorizing anything. Plan regular reviews of the words you learn. You can make flashcards with a word on one side and its meaning or translation on the other. There are mobile apps like Quizlet that make this process easy, interactive and fun!

One proven method is the “Spaced Repetition System”. This system suggests reviewing words more frequently first and then spacing out the reviews as you remember them better.

4. Use words in context

It’s not enough to learn single words; you also need to know how to use them. Try to create sentences with the new words you learn. For example, if your word is “book,” you could say: “I am reading an interesting book.

If you practice using them in sentences, it will be easier to remember them. You can also try writing short stories or simple dialogues using these words.

5. Play and have fun while you learn

When learning is fun, it is much more effective. Invest time in games such as crossword puzzles, English word searches or board games like Scrabble. There are apps and digital platforms specifically designed to improve vocabulary in a playful way, such as Duolingo or Memrise.

Another idea is to watch movies, series or videos in English with subtitles. As you listen to the characters speak, write down new words and use them in your own contexts – this also improves your pronunciation!
